Drive out of Ærøskøbing and follow the marked regional routes (90/91/92) in a complete round trip. First drive towards Marstal along the coast and stop at Eriks Hale. From there, turn northwest across the open countryside towards Søby, where the hills rise and the landscape opens up. Finish the round trip back to Ærøskøbing on quiet roads and save a turn towards Voderup Klint or up to Skjoldnæs Lighthouse if your legs are willing. Read more about cycling routes on Ærø.
The round trip is paved with a few gravel sections close to the coast. Choose the direction according to the wind so you get the open stretches with a tailwind and the hilly parts when your legs are warmed up. If the day is short, you can “cut corners” through cross roads between the towns and still maintain the feeling of having cycled the entire island.
Plan short stops at viewpoints, beaches and city life. A morning coffee in Ærøskøbing, a harbor break in Marstal and a late afternoon ice cream in Søby make the trip enjoyable and make the arrival back at the square a small celebration in itself.
A central overnight stay makes logistics simple. You start and end in the same place, can adjust the length of the day and roll straight into the square when it's time for a well-deserved break.
